our public art project:

In February 2019 many schools were invited to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of Kaldor Public Art Projects by putting in a proposal to work collaboratively within class groups to develop an innovative, site-specific artwork, which investigates the local environment and local communities.  Selected schools and works would be chosen for a showcase in November at the Art Gallery of NSW which would allow students to visually present their artwork/concept in a public forum as part of the official program of celebrations.

DHSVAD Visual Arts staff decided our proposal would start with our students interests and world. We gave our four Year 7 Visual Arts stream classes a 15 minute challenge:

With a partner create a poster about an issue that matters to you both!

The results included many posters like this:

Which reminded us of this:

Our Proposal:

Our work involves an installation and performance. It is in part inspired by the work of British artist Bob and Roberta Smith. The work will be performed at the annual Dulwich Hill Street Fair on Sunday 15th of September from 11 am

Students will march through the fair in a form of performance protest and end at the Seaview Gallery (which is on the street fair route) where placard works will be installed along with the bunting, banners, badges and our community chalkboard. There will also be a party polling booth run by student artists.

We want to engage the community! Our work is political- it is about climate change and our students want to convey their passion and concerns about this topic. We are also displaying the work on the busiest day in our community, hundreds of people visit the street fair and we want the work to engage them.

Come along and 'VOTE'!

Come along and leave your message on our chalkboard!

Come along and support us!

Students have worked in class time during Term 2 and are meeting in B05 on Wednesdays-Fridays in their lunch time to resolve this project.

All Year 7 Visual Arts stream classes also had a free workshop with the team from Kaldor Public Art Projects! (See images below)

The Department of Education, Arts Unit and Kaldor Public Art Projects are documenting our work in a film!

Here they are (below) interviewing students and they will also come along to the Dulwich Hill Street Fair to document the work in situ.

our BIg DAy: Street Fair

On Sunday the 15th of September 2019 students performed their work at the Dulwich Hill Street Fair.

There was a protest march (drawing spontaneous applause from the public), placards, badges, a polling booth, a chalkboard wall, prints, posters and a great deal of fun! Our whole community got involved supporting our Year 7 students and the messages shared and conversations about the work were so positive.

Thank you to Kaldor Public Art Projects for supporting our efforts and to the NSW department of Education, Arts Unit who filmed the event and have been incredibly supportive throughout.

Next stop?

The AGNSW and a screening of a film about our work in November!

TBC- We will keep updating this page.
